About
R. Brent Cooper is a seasoned trial and appellate attorney with more than four decades of experience in commercial litigation, insurance disputes, and complex business cases. He has tried over 100 cases in state and federal courts and argued more than 250 appeals before intermediate and supreme courts across several states. His practice also covers constitutional law, intellectual property, catastrophic injury claims, and legislative support where judicial remedies are insufficient.
Mr. Cooper earned his J.D., cum laude, from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1977, where he was Notes Editor of the Journal of Air Law & Commerce and a member of the Order of the Coif. He received his B.B.A., summa cum laude, from Texas A&M University in 1974. He is admitted to practice in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, the U.S. Supreme Court, and numerous federal courts.
Recognized as a leading authority in appellate and insurance law, Mr. Cooper is board-certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. His honors include repeated selections to Best Lawyers in America®, Texas Super Lawyers®, and Chambers USA. He was named a “Trial Legend” by the Dallas Bar Association and “Lawyer of the Year” in Insurance Law. He frequently lectures on insurance litigation, bad faith, and appellate practice for state and national legal forums.
In addition to authoring legal texts such as the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure Annotated and contributing to the Texas Annotated Insurance Code, R. Brent Cooper has written extensively for law reviews and legal publications. He is active in the Dallas Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute, and the American College of Coverage and Extracontractual Counsel, continuing to shape insurance and appellate law through both practice and scholarship.
