Phillip Free

Phillip Free is the founding attorney behind OKC IP Law, an intellectual property practice based in Edmond, Oklahoma. He represents businesses and rights holders in patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, and licensing disputes. His work also includes IP counseling, portfolio management, and agreements that help clients develop and protect intellectual property rights. He handles matters involving electrical, chemical, and computer-related technologies.

Free received his J.D. from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 1993 and a B.S. in Chemistry, cum laude, from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1988. His scientific training helps him assess technical questions underlying patent and trade secret disputes. He combines that background with more than three decades of legal practice when explaining intellectual property issues to clients, judges, and juries.

Free has litigated patent and trademark cases, unfair competition claims, copyright disputes, and matters involving contract and licensing rights in courts across the country. His work includes a reported Oklahoma trial decision involving the right of publicity. Beyond litigation, he counsels clients on patent and trademark applications, infringement opinions, searches, and intellectual property portfolio maintenance. He has been registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office since 1994.

Free was ranked Band 3 for Intellectual Property in Oklahoma by Chambers USA in 2026. He has appeared in The Best Lawyers in America since 2006 and has received recognition from Super Lawyers and Benchmark Litigation. A past president of the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Section, Phillip Free combines courtroom experience with practical advice on protecting, licensing, and enforcing intellectual property.
