About

Paula McCann brings decades of experience in estate planning and elder law, guiding individuals and families through complex legal and financial decisions. Her work centers on protecting assets, planning for long-term care, and addressing issues tied to aging and incapacity. She also advises clients on Medicare and Medicaid matters with clarity and care.

Paula earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1982 from the University of Vermont. She later received her Juris Doctor from Vermont Law School in 1995. Her academic background built a strong foundation in research, writing, and analysis, which continues to shape her thoughtful and practical approach to legal planning.

Paula began her career in public service, spending more than five years as legislative staff in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Her work focused on health, human services, and labor law. After law school, she worked in Chicago as a Senior Associate in the Health Care Provider Consulting practice at William M. Mercer, concentrating on Medicare, Medicaid, and other government healthcare programs.

Paula later practiced in Denver, Colorado, serving as Of Counsel in the Health Law Practice at Kutak Rock for four years. She then returned to Vermont and led the Medicare Advocacy Project at Vermont Legal Aid as Project Director. For twelve years, she continued to build a strong elder law practice, expanding services in estate planning and probate-related matters. She also maintains an estate and trust administration practice in Colorado, where she is licensed.

Paula McCann is dedicated to educating both clients and fellow attorneys about aging and end-of-life planning. She writes the blog On the Way to Dying, offering practical guidance on aging, dying, and after death isues. She frequently presents Continuing Legal Education seminars and public talks on preventing theft from elders and estates and recovering stolen assets. She is the co-author of Living Well On Other People’s Money, published in the Vermont Bar Association Journal in Spring 2012.
