Paul J. Avery

Paul J. Avery is a member at Bond, Schoeneck & King PLLC and practices from the firm’s Buffalo and Syracuse offices. He advises businesses, institutions, and nonprofit organizations on business and transactional matters, with particular experience serving colleges and universities. His work includes contract drafting and negotiation, business formation, mergers and acquisitions, institutional governance, regulatory compliance, athletics-related matters, and risk management. Avery helps clients structure agreements and business relationships while addressing legal and operational concerns.

Avery earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University at Buffalo School of Law in 2005 and his B.A., magna cum laude, from Bucknell University in 1999. He is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa and received the ABA/BNA Award for Excellence in the Study of Labor and Employment Law. His academic background provides a strong foundation for analyzing business, employment, regulatory, and governance issues that arise in his transactional and higher education practice.

Avery represents buyers and sellers in asset and equity transactions and assists with letters of intent, purchase agreements, confidentiality agreements, and related closing documents. He also reviews and negotiates employment, noncompetition, shareholder, independent contractor, supply, sponsorship, software license, SaaS, franchise, distribution, and development agreements. For higher education clients, his experience includes Title IX and NCAA compliance, sports camps, vendor and facilities contracts, institutional governance, and compliance matters involving the Clery Act, FERPA, HEOA, and NYPMIFA.

Paul J. Avery has been listed as an Upstate New York Rising Star in Business/Corporate by New York Super Lawyers for 2015 and 2016. He belongs to the New York State Bar Association, Onondaga County Bar Association, and National Association of College and University Attorneys. He has also served on the NACUANOTES Editorial Board Committee and as a board member and secretary of InfoTech WNY.
