Nicholas David Espiritu is a civil rights attorney whose career has focused on advancing equality, protecting constitutional rights, and addressing complex issues affecting immigrant communities. With more than two decades of legal and public policy experience, he has developed a strong record of advocacy in litigation, education, and public service. His work has centered on civil rights, immigration law, voting rights, and constitutional matters, demonstrating a deep commitment to fairness and justice.

Nicholas earned a B.A. in Sociology from San José State University in 2001. He later received a J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles – School of Law in 2004. While attending law school, he served as Managing Editor of the Chicano-Latino Law Review, strengthening his skills in legal research, writing, and analysis.

Nicholas has built extensive experience handling significant civil rights and immigration-related cases. Throughout his career, he has worked on legal challenges involving federal immigration policies, constitutional protections, and equal protection issues. His litigation experience includes matters challenging travel restrictions affecting majority-Muslim countries, disputes involving the Department of Homeland Security’s public charge regulation, challenges to Arizona’s denial of driver’s licenses for DACA recipients, and litigation concerning Arizona’s SB 1070 law. These cases involved important questions regarding constitutional rights, federal authority, and equal treatment under the law.

Nicholas has also contributed to the legal profession through leadership roles and legal education. He served as a Commissioner on the American Bar Association Immigration Commission and later as a Member of the Immigration Advisory Commission. In addition to his advocacy work, he taught the Voting Rights Law Seminar and Immigration Policy Clinic as a Lecturer in Law at the University of California, Los Angeles – School of Law. His interest in human rights policy further led to service as a Fellow at the Harvard Carr Center for Human Rights Policy.
