Nancy L. Thompson

Nancy L. Thompson is a Des Moines bankruptcy and consumer protection attorney. For approximately four decades, she has helped consumers, farmers, and small businesses address debt problems. Her practice includes bankruptcy, debt collection disputes, credit reporting concerns, student loan matters, and related financial issues. Nancy also has experience working on debt questions involving farm credit and mortgage foreclosure, making her practice relevant to people whose obligations affect a home, business, or agricultural operation.

Nancy received a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Iowa State University and earned her J.D., with honors, from the University of Iowa College of Law. Before entering private practice, she worked as a Farm Law attorney for the Nebraska Legal Aid Society and as an attorney with the Center for Rural Affairs. These positions gave her a background in consumer protection and rural financial problems that continues to inform her bankruptcy and debt practice.

Nancy has written articles and presented at legal seminars on bankruptcy, student loans, mortgage foreclosure, and farm credit. Her work also covers legal protections available to people facing debt collection proceedings. She has taken part in legislative advocacy concerning Iowa’s personal property exemptions for debtors.

Nancy L. Thompson received the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys Distinguished Service Award in 2015. She chaired the Commercial and Bankruptcy Section of the Iowa State Bar Association from 2006 to 2008 and received an Outstanding Section Chair recognition for legislative advocacy in 2007. Nancy is a member of state and national consumer bankruptcy organizations. Her career combines direct client representation, legal education, and advocacy concerning debtor protections.
