Michael began his academic journey at the University of Wisconsin, earning a B.S. in Education and History. He went on to obtain an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Duke University before earning his J.D., with High Honors and Order of the Coif, from Duke Law School. This unique educational background, merging technical expertise and legal excellence, forms the foundation of his highly analytical and effective counsel.
Over the course of his career, Michael has represented clients in patent prosecutions, reexaminations, and inter partes reviews before the USPTO. He has provided strategic opinions on patent validity, infringement, and freedom-to-operate matters while helping clients develop, protect, and monetize their patent portfolios. His experience spans integrated circuit design, artificial intelligence, mobile devices, medical imaging, telecommunications, optical and photonic technologies, quantum computing, and renewable energy systems.
Michael is also a respected author and speaker on patent law. From 2000 to 2016, he contributed extensively to the legal treatise Electronic and Software Patents, Law and Practice, published by the Bureau of National Affairs and later Bloomberg/BNA, where he addressed key issues in claim interpretation. He has lectured on overcoming Section 101 rejections, handling examiner interviews, and drafting applications for emerging technologies, particularly in AI and bioinformatics.
