About
Michael Kohler is a Long Island immigration lawyer who represents individuals and businesses in a wide range of immigration matters. Based in Melville, New York, Kohler handles naturalization and citizenship, family-based immigration, employment-based immigration, non-immigrant visas, employment verification, and currency seizure matters. He helps clients understand complex immigration rules, prepare petitions and applications, address compliance concerns, and pursue practical solutions involving federal immigration agencies.
Kohler earned his J.D. from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in 1996 and his B.A. from the State University of New York at Albany in 1992. His academic background was followed by immediate federal immigration experience through the US Department of Justice Attorney General Honors Program. This training supports his ability to analyze immigration procedures, evaluate eligibility issues, and guide clients through applications, petitions, and agency processes with careful legal judgment.
Kohler began his career as a law clerk for the Executive Office for Immigration Review at the US Immigration Court in New York. From 1997 to 2003, he served as Assistant District Counsel for the Immigration and Naturalization Service, representing the government in deportation and removal proceedings. After the Department of Homeland Security was created in 2003, he worked in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement Law Division on customs and law enforcement matters. Since opening a private practice in 2008, he has assisted clients from more than 80 countries and territories.
Michael Kohler has served as past chair of the Immigration Law Committee of the Nassau County Bar Association and is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Kohler frequently lectures and contributes to continuing legal education programs and publications for both organizations. His pro bono work includes the AILA Military Assistance Program and assistance for immigrant victims of domestic violence through the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence. He brings government insight, steady advocacy, and practical guidance to clients facing immigration, compliance, and customs-related concerns.
