Michael J. McCarthy

Michael J. McCarthy is a highly experienced Michigan attorney focused on criminal defense at both the trial and appellate levels. Since his admission to the State Bar of Michigan in 1979, he has represented clients in felony cases throughout Southeastern Michigan and in federal courts. His practice includes appearances before the Michigan Supreme Court, the Michigan Court of Appeals, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.

Mr. McCarthy earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Michigan State University in 1975 and his J.D. from the University of Detroit School of Law, now University of Detroit Mercy, in 1979. His strong academic foundation prepared him for a distinguished legal career focused on advocacy, appellate law, and criminal defense. He is admitted to practice before state and federal courts, where he has built a reputation for effective and thorough representation.

Over the years, Mr. McCarthy has tried numerous felony cases and guided appeals that shaped key aspects of Michigan criminal procedure. He coauthored the chapter Posttrial Motions and Appeals in Michigan Criminal Procedure, published by the Institute for Continuing Legal Education in 2010. In addition, he frequently lectures for the Oakland County Bar Association’s Criminal Law Committee, sharing his expertise with both new and experienced practitioners. His dedication to professionalism was recognized in 2012 with the Oakland County Bar Association’s Professionalism Award.
