Matt began his academic journey earning a B.A. from The College of Wooster, followed by an M.A. from Tulane University. He later earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from The Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as Senior Articles Editor of The Georgetown Law Journal. His education built the foundation for his expertise in ethics, white-collar defense, and civil rights matters.
Matt is a former Assistant Federal Public Defender with extensive courtroom experience and a strong track record resolving sensitive matters discreetly outside of court. He has earned multiple awards for his work in legal ethics, professional responsibility, white-collar criminal defense, and civil rights, and is consistently recognized as one of Washington, D.C.’s leading attorneys.
Matt’s leadership in the legal community includes serving three years as Chair of the District of Columbia Board on Professional Responsibility and teaching professional responsibility as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center. His contributions extend internationally through lectures and consulting on legal ethics.
Matt’s professional involvement includes Co-Chair of the International Bar Association’s Criminal Law Committee, membership in the ABA Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary, and roles with the Bar Association of D.C. and the D.C. Bar’s Board of Governors. He is also a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a permanent member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference.
