About

Marla B. Matthews is a partner at Pierce Atwood with offices in Portsmouth and Concord, New Hampshire. Her practice focuses on trusts and estates planning, including general wealth transfer, gift and estate tax planning, and business succession planning. She works with individuals and families to develop practical solutions for complex questions involving property, family goals, and legacy planning. She also maintains a guardianship practice for clients dealing with incapacity and fiduciary responsibilities in probate court.

Marla earned a J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law and a B.S. from Keene State College. Her legal education supports a practice that combines estate planning, tax-sensitive wealth transfer, probate issues, and guardianship work. Before entering private practice, she clerked for Associate Justice James E. Duggan of the New Hampshire Supreme Court. That judicial experience provided a strong foundation in legal analysis and court procedure, which complements her planning practice and her representation of clients in guardianship and other probate-related matters.

Marla advises clients on estate plans designed to address wealth transfer, gift and estate taxation, and business succession. In guardianship matters, she represents clients petitioning for authority over an incapacitated person and advises appointed guardians on fiduciary duties. Before joining Pierce Atwood, she was a founding partner of Myskowski & Matthews, PLLC. Her experience allows her to address planning needs alongside the court and fiduciary issues that can arise when incapacity, family responsibilities, or legacy concerns become more complex.

Marla B. Matthews has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America for Trusts and Estates. She participates in the New Hampshire Estate Planning Council and the New Hampshire Bar Association Trust and Estate Law Section and has served on community and charitable committees. Her work emphasizes understandable and efficient planning for individuals and families. She helps clients organize wealth transfers, succession arrangements, guardianship responsibilities, and related legal matters with attention to practical outcomes and long-term family objectives.
