Marc S. Whitfield

Marc S. Whitfield is a partner at Taylor Porter who focuses on commercial litigation, intellectual property, technology law, and healthcare matters. He advises clients on business contracts, contract negotiations, licensing, non-compete disputes, data security, cybersecurity, and data breach issues. Whitfield also represents businesses and institutions in litigation involving copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, unfair trade practices, and other complex commercial claims.

Whitfield earned a B.S. from Louisiana State University in 1984 and a J.D. from the Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1987. He received an LL.M. in Taxation from Southern Methodist University in 1988. His legal and tax education provides a strong foundation for evaluating business transactions, intellectual property rights, financial considerations, and disputes that require careful analysis of contractual and regulatory obligations.

Whitfield has served as lead counsel in significant intellectual property and commercial matters. His experience includes copyright, trademark, trade dress, cybersquatting, data breach, and non-compete litigation, as well as trademark opposition proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. He has represented universities, insurers, public entities, and publicly traded companies, including in contract and unfair trade practice claims exceeding $750 million. He also handles software licensing, trademark registration, copyright registration, and mergers and acquisitions.

Marc S. Whitfield is admitted to practice in Louisiana and Texas, before Louisiana federal courts and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He previously served as chief bar examiner for the Business Entities and Negotiable Instruments section of the Louisiana Bar Examination.
