Madeline J. Rettig is a dedicated civil rights attorney at Marshall Forman & Schlein LLC, where she represents individuals in cases involving police misconduct, wrongful termination, discrimination, retaliation, and other constitutional and employment law issues. Since joining the firm in 2018, she has been committed to protecting civil liberties and advocating for justice through strategic litigation.
Ms. Rettig earned her Juris Doctor cum laude from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. During law school, she demonstrated academic excellence, receiving the Labor and Employment Academic Achievement Award and designation as a Public Service Fellow for completing over 100 hours of pro bono work. She also earned CALI Excellence Awards for her work in the Civil Law Clinic and Employee Benefits, and served as the Chief Articles Editor for the Ohio State Law Journal. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Political Science from Ohio University, where she graduated magna cum laude and earned a Certificate in Law, Justice & Culture.
Her practice focuses on constitutional litigation, where she fights for the rights of individuals who have been wrongfully accused, mistreated, or discriminated against. She has successfully represented protestors, securing a permanent injunction against the Columbus Division of Police to restrict excessive force against peaceful demonstrators. She also handles cases involving police brutality, wrongful deaths of incarcerated individuals, and employment discrimination, particularly for individuals with “invisible” disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Ms. Rettig’s experience includes serving as a judicial extern for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, where she conducted in-depth legal research, drafted bench memoranda, and analyzed complex legal issues. She has also worked in the public sector, advocating for death row inmates, wrongfully convicted individuals, and low-income clients navigating the criminal justice system.
Recognized for her contributions to civil rights law, Ms. Rettig has been named a Super Lawyers Rising Star (2021-2023) and received the 2023 Rising Litigator Award from the Ohio State Bar Association. She continues to advocate for justice, fighting for individuals whose rights have been violated.
