Lloyd C. Suhr

Lloyd C. Suhr is a criminal defense attorney at Suhr Law, PLLC in Bismarck, North Dakota. He has practiced almost exclusively in criminal law for more than 20 years and represents clients in state and federal matters involving homicide, violent offenses, DUI, drug crimes, sex crimes, property offenses, juvenile cases, and white collar allegations. Lloyd helps clients understand the charges, evaluate the evidence, and prepare a focused defense strategy.

Lloyd earned his J.D. from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1997 after receiving a B.A. from Jamestown College in 1994. He is admitted to practice before the North Dakota Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court for the District of North Dakota, and the U.S. Supreme Court. His legal education and extensive courtroom experience support a practical approach to criminal procedure, evidence, constitutional protections, and appellate advocacy.

Before entering private defense practice, Lloyd served for 11 years as a prosecutor with the Burleigh County State’s Attorney’s Office. Across his career, he has handled thousands of criminal cases in nearly every area of criminal law, including multiple homicide matters. He has also managed dozens of post-conviction proceedings before the North Dakota Supreme Court. His experience on both sides of the courtroom helps him assess prosecution strategies, identify weaknesses in the government’s case, and prepare clients for each stage of the process.

Lloyd C. Suhr serves on the Advisory Commission on Electronic Media in the Courtroom and the State Bar Association Legislative Committee. He previously served on the North Dakota Joint Procedures Committee. He teaches Criminal Procedure at the University of Mary and Criminal Law and Use of Force at the North Dakota Law Enforcement Training Academy. Lloyd is also a member of national and state criminal defense organizations and has been selected to Super Lawyers for criminal defense and DUI work.
