Leif R. Sigmond Jr.

Leif R. Sigmond Jr. is an intellectual property lawyer and partner at BakerHostetler, partner-in-charge of the firm’s Chicago office, co-chair of the Patent Litigation Group, and chair of the Software Industry Group. He has more than 30 years of experience in high-stakes intellectual property disputes. His practice includes patent litigation, trademark disputes, trade secret matters, contract claims, software issues, patent appeals, and proceedings before the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Leif earned his J.D. magna cum laude from Delaware Law School, where he served as Business Manager of the Delaware Journal of Corporate Law. He received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Lafayette College. His engineering background supports work involving electrical, mechanical, and software technologies, while his legal training supports complex litigation, appellate advocacy, and intellectual property counseling for companies facing technically demanding disputes.

Leif has first-chair jury trial experience in major patent cases and has litigated in federal district courts, the Federal Circuit, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and arbitration before the International Chamber of Commerce. He leads multidisciplinary legal teams in competitor disputes and other contentious matters. His work includes intellectual property counseling as well as litigation strategy, with an emphasis on preparing cases for trial while remaining attentive to business-oriented resolutions.
