Kris Thelen

Kris Thelen is the founding attorney and managing partner of Thelen & Associates, LLC, a family law firm serving Waukesha and surrounding Wisconsin communities. Her practice focuses on divorce, child custody, placement, visitation, child support, maintenance, and property division. She also handles prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, cohabitation issues, and family law mediation. She works with people navigating changes in family relationships and the legal decisions that accompany those transitions.

Thelen earned a Juris Doctorate from Marquette University Law School in 1991 after receiving a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Washington in 1988. She began practicing law in Michigan before returning to Wisconsin in 1994 to develop her family law practice. Her education and decades of practice provide a foundation for analyzing financial, parenting, and procedural questions in family-related disputes.

Thelen’s work includes proceedings in trial courts throughout southeastern Wisconsin and matters before the Wisconsin Court of Appeals and the Wisconsin Supreme Court. In 1997, she helped form Brazil, Thelen & Benske, S.C., before establishing Thelen & Associates, LLC. Thelen handles contested family law issues involving parental responsibility, support obligations, marital property, and agreements between partners. She also serves clients facing paternity and other family court proceedings.

Kris Thelen has been recognized as a Wisconsin Super Lawyer and participates in professional groups including the State Bar of Wisconsin Family Law Section, Waukesha Bar Association, Society of Family Lawyers, and Wisconsin Association of Mediators. Her involvement in mediation and family law organizations complements her courtroom practice. She assists clients in understanding available legal approaches while working toward practical arrangements for parenting, finances, and family responsibilities.
