Joseph P. Briggett is a Shareholder at Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC who represents clients in bankruptcy and restructuring, creditors’ rights, and complex commercial litigation. He has extensive experience guiding financial institutions, businesses, and individuals through insolvency proceedings, loan disputes, and commercial foreclosures. His practice spans bankruptcy court, federal and state trial courts, and cross-border disputes. Known for tailoring strategies to each case, Briggett provides both practical solutions and aggressive advocacy when litigation is unavoidable.
Briggett earned his B.A. from Tulane University in 2003 and his J.D., magna cum laude, from Tulane University Law School in 2010. While in law school, he served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Jerry A. Brown, Bankruptcy Judge for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, gaining early insight into the intricacies of bankruptcy practice. He is admitted to practice in Louisiana, Florida, and Texas, as well as before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the Eleventh Circuit.
In addition to his bankruptcy work, Briggett has significant experience in maritime insolvency. He has represented shipping companies and offshore service providers in cases involving maritime liens, vessel finance, ship mortgages, and personal injury claims. His broader litigation experience includes breach of contract, property disputes, corporate governance, fiduciary duty claims, and banking law. With a strong trial background, he has served as first-chair in multiple cases, successfully resolving disputes for clients across industries ranging from hospitality to financial services.
