About
Jonathan M. Sumrell is a partner at Hancock Daniel, where he advises healthcare providers on corporate, employment law, and operational matters. He helps hospitals, physician practices, and other healthcare organizations address legal issues that can affect their workforces and daily operations. He drafts and revises physician employment agreements, severance agreements, employee policies, procedures, and other operational documents. He also represents employers during investigations and in federal and state litigation involving employment and healthcare-related disputes.
Jonathan earned his B.A. from Wake Forest University and his J.D. magna cum laude from the University of Richmond School of Law. He is admitted to practice in Iowa, North Carolina, and Virginia. During law school, he served as manuscripts editor for the Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest. He was also elected as a justice of the Honor Council and participated on the Client Counseling and Negotiation Board. Before private practice, he completed a clerkship with the Circuit Court of Henrico County, Virginia.
Jonathan counsels employers on employee benefits, including welfare and fringe benefit plans and compliance with the Employee Retirement Income Security Act. He represents employers before agencies such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Department of Labor. His earlier work as a deputy press secretary for a US senator strengthened his ability to research complicated issues and communicate practical recommendations. His general-practice and judicial-clerkship experience also gives him a broad perspective when evaluating legal and business concerns.
Jonathan M. Sumrell combines detailed research with advice designed to work in real healthcare settings. He adapts his guidance as employment laws, regulatory requirements, and industry practices change. He was selected as a Virginia Super Lawyers Rising Star in 2016 and has appeared in Best Lawyers in America for 2024, 2025, and 2026. His practical judgment and clear communication help healthcare clients manage disputes, improve policies, and make informed operational decisions.
