John T. Bird

John T. Bird is the senior partner at Glassman Bird Powell, L.L.P. in Hays, Kansas. His practice focuses on civil matters and family law cases involving complex issues and substantial marital estates. He also handles personal injury, estate planning, municipal law, litigation, probate, oil and gas, and general practice matters. Bird helps individuals, families, businesses, and public entities address disputes, plan for important transitions, and manage legal responsibilities.

Bird earned his undergraduate degree from Washburn University in 1970 and his J.D. from Washburn University School of Law in 1974, graduating with honors from both institutions. After law school, he returned to Hays to practice with Robert F. Glassman. His academic training and decades of legal work provide a strong foundation for evaluating complicated financial, family, property, and governmental issues with careful analysis and practical judgment.

Bird has appeared in courthouses across 97 of Kansas’s 105 counties. His experience includes complex family law matters, municipal representation, and natural resources work involving water supplies for Hays, Ellis County, and Northwest Kansas. He has led legal efforts involving a water ranch intended to support the region’s long-term potable water needs. Bird has also served as an assistant Ellis County attorney, Ellis City Attorney, and Hays City Attorney.

John T. Bird received the Kansas Bar Association’s Outstanding Service Award in 2017 for service advancing the legal profession and the administration of justice. He served for many years on the Kansas Supreme Court Child Support Guidelines Committee and helped develop statewide child support guidelines. Bird is admitted to the US District Court, the US Supreme Court, and the US Supreme Court, and he regularly speaks on water law, family law, and legal ethics.
