John Masterson is a shareholder at Welborn Sullivan Meck & Tooley in Casper, Wyoming, with a practice spanning litigation, government relations, transactions, and strategic counseling. Masterson earned a J.D. from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 1986 and a B.A. from the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science and the Arts in 1983. His education began a legal career that has moved through criminal law, public service, policy work, land and mineral administration, and private practice. That varied background supports his ability to evaluate disputes from legal, governmental, and operational perspectives.
Masterson spent 16 years in criminal law as a public defender, Assistant District Attorney, and Assistant U.S. Attorney. He later served as legal counsel to Governor Dave Freudenthal and as Deputy Director of the Wyoming Office of State Lands and Investments. In private practice, he has handled commercial and complex litigation, regulatory and permitting matters, business and estate planning, state and federal trials, and appeals before the Wyoming Supreme Court and Tenth Circuit.
John Masterson is a past President of the Wyoming State Bar and has continued public service through roles that include the Wyoming Board of Law Examiners and an appointment to the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission. He has also received recognition from Best Lawyers, Chambers USA, Super Lawyers, and Lawdragon. His career combines courtroom experience, government service, and strategic counseling for clients facing complex legal and policy issues.
