About
John M. Cooper is a founding partner at Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers and a veteran of Virginia personal injury law. His practice focuses on helping injured victims and families in cases involving auto accidents, railroad accidents, truck wrecks, catastrophic injuries, and wrongful death claims across Virginia courts statewide.
John earned his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1985, graduating with Phi Beta Kappa Honors. He earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1988. These degrees helped prepare him for a long career in personal-injury litigation in Virginia.
John returned to Hampton Roads after law school and worked as a law clerk for a federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Norfolk Division. He later built a career focused on injury law, litigation, and accident claims for injured clients in court.
John has worked with injured victims and families for over 35 years. He understands that serious accidents can cause long-term harm and that catastrophic cases require time, skill, and resources. His work includes car crashes, truck accidents, railroad accidents, brain injuries, and wrongful death matters in court litigation.
John has helped recover many millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements for clients. In 2020, he and his team obtained a $6,500,000 recovery for a car accident plaintiff left quadriplegic. His other results include settlements for traumatic brain injury and child passenger injury cases in Virginia injury claims.
John has earned honors, including Top Lawyer by Coastal Virginia Magazine, VA Super Lawyer, an AV Rating by Martindale-Hubbell, U.S. News Best Lawyers recognition for Plaintiff’s Personal Injury and Railroad Law, Virginia Lawyers Weekly Leader in the Law, and Hall of Fame inductee recognition for professional legal service.
John M. Cooper is admitted to practice in Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia. His associations include the Academy of Truck Accident Attorneys, Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, American Association for Justice, Association of Rail Labor Attorneys, Brain Injury Association of Virginia, and several local Virginia bar associations.
