John J. Hines

John J. Hines is a seasoned trial attorney whose legal career spans more than four decades. Since beginning practice in 1980, he has built a reputation for handling complex disputes with careful preparation, practical judgment, and a strong commitment to client advocacy. His experience covers a wide range of litigation matters, allowing him to represent individuals, families, businesses, and landowners in challenging legal situations. Throughout his career, he has remained focused on achieving effective solutions while protecting the interests of those he serves.

John earned a B.A. in History & Psychology from Luther College in 1977. He later received a J.D. from the University of Iowa in 1980. After completing his legal education, he began public service as an Assistant County Attorney in Northwood, Iowa. He then served as Jones County Attorney through 1986 while also operating a general practice office in Monticello. These early roles provided broad exposure to many areas of the law and helped shape a versatile litigation practice.

John has concentrated much of his career on trial work and has represented clients in jury trials in both State and Federal Courts. His practice includes criminal defense, complex fraud and commercial litigation, family law matters, and condemnation cases. He has also developed extensive experience representing landowners in condemnation proceedings involving pipeline projects and highway right-of-way acquisitions. This broad litigation background enables him to address difficult legal disputes with a strategic and informed approach.

John remains active in the legal community through membership in the Iowa State Bar Association, Black Hawk County Bar Associations, Iowa Association for Justice, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is also a contributing member of the Volunteer Lawyers Project and provides more than 50 hours of pro bono legal services each year to individuals in need. His dedication to public service reflects a longstanding commitment to expanding access to legal representation.
