John H. Redfield

John H. Redfield is a seasoned bankruptcy attorney serving clients throughout Illinois with decades of focused legal experience. Since beginning his practice in 1976, he has concentrated on bankruptcy law, representing individuals and businesses in Chapter 7, Chapter 11, and Chapter 13 matters. His work at John H. Redfield & Associates includes guiding debtors through complex financial challenges, advising secured creditors and landlords, and representing creditor committees in high-stakes proceedings. Known for his deep understanding of insolvency law, Mr. Redfield brings clarity and structure to cases that often involve significant financial pressure and legal complexity.

Mr. Redfield earned a B.A. from the University of Michigan before completing his J.D. at John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He later obtained an LL.M. from DePaul School of Law, further strengthening his focus on complex legal and financial matters. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Taxation from DePaul University College of Law and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) from the University of Illinois.

Mr. Redfield has handled a wide range of bankruptcy-related litigation throughout his career. He has prosecuted and defended preference actions, fraudulent transfer claims, and dischargeability disputes, including appellate matters. In addition, he has represented taxpayers before the United States Tax Court and the Internal Revenue Service. He has served as a tax consultant for corporate, personal, and estate tax planning. His experience also includes corporate dissolutions, assignments for the benefit of creditors, and commercial litigation tied to financial restructuring.

John H. Redfield has also played key roles within the bankruptcy system itself. He previously served as a law clerk to a United States Bankruptcy Judge, assisting in the drafting of legal opinions, and was appointed as a bankruptcy trustee under both the Bankruptcy Act and the Bankruptcy Code. Through speaking engagements with the Practicing Law Institute and the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education, he has helped educate other professionals while continuing to deliver effective, results-driven representation for clients navigating financial recovery.
