John F. Carroll

John F. Carroll is the Managing Partner of Carroll & Nuttall and a seasoned trial lawyer with decades of experience representing individuals in both civil and criminal matters. He is widely recognized for his courtroom skill and strategic advocacy in cases involving significant legal and personal consequences.

John earned his Juris Doctor from George Mason University School of Law in 1992 after completing his Bachelor of Arts at Brown University in 1986. While at Brown, he served as a student representative on the Athletic Advisory Council and was a captain of the varsity men’s soccer team, earning All-Ivy League and All-New England honors.

In his civil litigation practice, John has recovered millions of dollars for clients in complex matters, including employment disputes, workplace violence claims, automobile and trucking accidents, nursing home abuse, sexual abuse cases, and whistleblower actions. As a former prosecutor, he brings valuable insight to whistleblower cases within the Commonwealth of Virginia, combining investigative knowledge with effective trial strategy.

John’s criminal and traffic practice is equally extensive. Having served as a prosecutor in Fairfax County, he represents clients at critical early stages of criminal investigations and proceedings. His criminal defense experience includes misdemeanor offenses, serious felonies, and homicide cases. In 2015, he represented a Fairfax County police officer in the first case of its kind involving a murder charge, reflecting his ability to handle highly sensitive and complex matters. John F. Carroll has also represented clients in nationally publicized, high-profile criminal cases, including the defense of Brendan Banfield, an IRS investigator charged in a widely reported Virginia murder case involving his wife and the family’s au pair.

Admitted to practice in Virginia and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, John is actively involved in numerous professional organizations and regularly presents at continuing legal education programs. He also serves as General Counsel for the Fairfax Coalition of Police, Local 5000.
