John D. Cromie is a business lawyer and partner at Connell Foley LLP, with more than 30 years of experience in corporate, real estate, financing, and banking matters. He serves as co-chair of the Corporate and Business Law practice and sits on his firm’s Executive Committee. He advises Fortune 100 companies, middle-market businesses, startups, government entities, and nonprofit organizations on transactions and continuing operations. His work covers mergers, acquisitions, commercial real estate, public finance, lending, succession planning, and outside general counsel services.

John earned his B.A. in Economics from the University of Notre Dame in 1984. He received his J.D. cum laude from Seton Hall University School of  Law in 1987. After graduation, he clerked for New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Daniel J. O’Hern from 1987 through 1988. He is admitted in New Jersey, New York, and the US District Court for the District of New Jersey. He entered private practice afterward and has spent his legal career advising businesses and financial institutions.

John represents buyers, sellers, borrowers, lenders, investors, developers, and business owners in sophisticated commercial transactions. He structures mergers, stock sales, asset purchases, credit facilities, bond offerings, leases, developments, and other financing arrangements. His clients operate in construction, manufacturing, specialty chemicals, healthcare, commercial real estate, and related industries. He frequently serves as outside general counsel, helping closely held companies address governance, growth, operational challenges, and ownership transitions. His practical approach connects legal strategy with each client’s financial objectives and long-term business plans.

John D. Cromie has held leadership roles within business, legal, and community organizations throughout his career. He served three terms as a borough councilman in Allendale, New Jersey, while maintaining his legal practice. His service includes leadership with USLAW NETWORK and board work for the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey. He has received recognition from Chambers USA, Best Lawyers, New Jersey Super Lawyers, NJBIZ, and the New Jersey Law Journal. His professional record reflects extensive transactional knowledge, civic involvement, and sustained leadership within New Jersey’s business community.
