A graduate of the University of Memphis School of Law, John earned his Juris Doctor in 1974, following a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971 from the same institution. During law school, he was active in Phi Delta Phi and served as Vice-Magister. He was admitted to the Tennessee Bar in 1974 and has maintained long-standing memberships with the Memphis, Shelby County, and Tennessee Bar Associations.

Throughout his career, John has handled an extensive range of legal matters—from insurance defense and commercial litigation to representing clients in probate court, real estate disputes, and landlord-tenant issues. For the past 25 years, he has concentrated on probate and real estate law, assisting clients with estate administration, will contests, conservatorships, guardianships, and quiet title actions.

John is recognized for his ethical standards and legal ability, holding an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell and is ALTA Certified for real estate closings. His work includes resolving boundary disputes, redeeming properties post-tax sale, and asserting claims for excess proceeds. John B. Philip is also an experienced mediator and arbitrator, having served in those roles from 2016 to 2019.
