John B. Harwood

John B. Harwood brings more than 37 years of legal experience to clients across Rhode Island and Massachusetts. As co-founder of McKinnon & Harwood, LLC, and Harwood, Garland & McKiernan LLC, he has built a respected litigation practice focused on practical judgment, preparation, and strong client advocacy in complex matters.

John’s academic background includes a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, an M.B.A. from the University of Miami in 1975, and a J.D. from Boston College Law School in 1978. He was admitted to the Rhode Island bar in 1978, the Massachusetts bar in 1985, and the federal courts. His practice includes personal injury, domestic relations, product liability, and DUI defense.

As a seasoned litigator, John has represented clients in Rhode Island and Massachusetts courts and argued numerous matters before the Rhode Island Supreme Court. His work reflects careful case preparation, clear communication, and strategic courtroom advocacy designed to protect clients’ rights during negotiations, hearings, trials, and appeals from start to finish. Beyond traditional litigation, his legal career has included representation of professional athletes in contract negotiations. He has advised NHL and AHL players on important career matters, using his negotiation experience and legal insight to help clients evaluate options, understand risks, and pursue favorable terms in key professional agreements, achieving lasting outcomes.

John B. Harwood also has a notable record of public service connected to law and civic leadership. He served in the Rhode Island House of Representatives from 1980 to 2004 and as Speaker of the House from 1993 to 2003, helping lead legislative efforts and budget responsibilities with care. His professional service and civic contributions have earned significant recognition, including the Robert Cy Killian Humanitarian Award, the March of Dimes Citizen of the Year Award, and induction into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame in 2022.
