John A. Martin is a Bristol, Tennessee, officer and practice group leader for workers’ compensation and employment law. He represents employers and insurers in workers’ compensation defense, employment matters, liability disputes, and general litigation. His work includes advising insurance claims representatives, human resources managers, and employers on exposure, workplace obligations, and case strategy. He also supports small business development and serves as counsel to the Virginia Highlands Small Business Incubator.
Martin earned a J.D. from the University of Richmond School of Law in 1994. He also attended Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia. His education supports a practice built on legal analysis, trial preparation, employment counseling, and practical problem solving. That background helps him evaluate workers’ compensation claims, workplace disputes, liability risks, contract issues, and litigation strategy for employers, insurers, businesses, and individuals.
Martin has more than 26 years of trial experience. He regularly handles matters before the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission, Tennessee Court of Workers’ Compensation Claims, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and US Department of Labor. His employment practice includes workplace harassment, medical leave, wages and overtime, workplace disabilities and accommodations, and employment contract disputes. He also represents employees in complex employment matters and plaintiffs in personal injury claims.
John A. Martin is admitted in Virginia and Tennessee, along with federal courts in Virginia and Tennessee, and the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Before joining his current practice, he served as County Attorney for Washington County, Virginia, and was a partner at Ely and Martin. He also served in the United States Army as an Intelligence Analyst and was deployed to Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm.
