Jan I. Berlage is a partner at Gohn Hankey & Berlage LLP in Baltimore, Maryland, with over two decades of litigation experience. His diverse legal practice spans commercial litigation, intellectual property, bankruptcy, and administrative proceedings, representing clients in both state and federal courts across the country.

Mr. Berlage earned his B.A. from Wesleyan University in 1992, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and studied at St. Catherine’s College, Oxford. He received his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1995, where he served as Executive Director of the Journal of Law and Politics.

Mr. Berlage began his legal career as a clerk for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Maryland and went on to work at leading firms in Connecticut and Baltimore. His trial experience includes major jury verdicts, arbitrations, and appellate advocacy before the Maryland Court of Appeals and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Mr. Berlage has achieved notable outcomes, including a $1.6 million jury verdict in a copyright case and a $1 million wrongful death settlement. He has also successfully defended clients in high-stakes federal and state litigation, including intellectual property and commercial fraud cases.

Licensed in Maryland, D.C., New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, Mr. Berlage frequently serves as local counsel in complex multi-jurisdictional matters. His work includes advising on real estate disputes, copyright and trademark matters, equine law, and commercial bankruptcies involving multimillion-dollar transactions.

An accomplished legal educator and author, Mr. Berlage co-wrote Maryland Equine Law and regularly presents CLE courses. He is a fellow of the American and Maryland State Bar Foundations and has served on numerous state and national legal committees.
