James W. Stone

James W. Stone is a co-founder of Kane & Stone, P.A. in Hagerstown, Maryland. His practice focuses on business, commercial, and contract law, along with civil litigation, appeals, corporate and partnership matters, real estate development, and estate planning. He also assists with wills, trusts, probate, and estate administration. He has practiced in Washington County since 1982 and brings prior business management experience to his legal work.

James earned a B.E.S. in Electrical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University in 1968 and an M.B.A. in Finance from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business in 1970. He received his J.D. from American University Washington College of Law in 1981. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Beta Gamma Sigma, and the law school’s honor society. His technical, financial, and legal education supports his business-oriented practice.

James began his career at American Management Systems, developing computerized accounting and financial management systems for business and government. He became a vice president and served in senior management roles, including chief financial officer. After law school, he entered private practice in Hagerstown. Before co-founding his current firm, he held leadership roles at several local practices. His experience spans commercial transactions, disputes, property development, and estate matters.

James W. Stone has served for more than three decades on the Hagerstown Planning Commission, including as vice chairman. He has also held leadership positions with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Washington County and served on the boards of the Community Free Clinic and Maryland Symphony Orchestra. His combined experience in finance, management, and law informs his advice to businesses and individuals dealing with complex legal and financial matters.
