James Turken

James H. Turken is a seasoned trial lawyer known for handling complex disputes across the country. He has tried more than 60 jury trials, along with many bench trials and arbitrations. His practice focuses on commercial litigation, intellectual property, trade secrets, trademarks, copyrights, securities litigation and enforcement defense, construction matters, and labor and employment disputes.

James earned his BA from Loyola University in 1975. He later received his JD, cum laude, from Southwestern Law School in 1979. During law school, he contributed to the Southwestern Law Review. His academic background laid a strong foundation for his courtroom advocacy and detailed understanding of legal analysis and written argument.

James has led major litigation teams and has chaired or co-chaired litigation departments at several large firms. He secured a US$1.6 million jury award and $2 million in attorneys’ fees in a discrimination case involving violations of the Unruh Civil Rights Act. In another matter, he defended a public company in a binding arbitration seeking approximately US$1 billion in damages.

James also defended securities class actions in federal and state courts, seeking more than US$250 million in damages. He represented Techmedia in a US$500 million dispute and obtained a US$121 million jury verdict on a cross-complaint, a result noted by The National Law Journal as one of the largest jury verdicts of the year. He has also defended patent and copyright claims in federal court involving a publicly traded satellite communications company.
