James R. Winkler

James R. Winkler is Of Counsel at Winkler Kurtz, LLP in Port Jefferson Station, New York. He has more than 35 years of concentrated experience in matrimonial and family law. Winkler represents clients in divorce, domestic relations, and related family matters, helping individuals and families address sensitive disputes with practical guidance. His work emphasizes fair resolutions, careful preparation, and a balanced approach to litigation and settlement.

Winkler received his undergraduate education at the University of Virginia and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he graduated cum laude in 1971. He earned his J.D. from Albany Law School of Union University in 1976. His education provided a strong foundation in legal analysis, advocacy, and problem solving, supporting his long career in matrimonial law, family disputes, mediation, and client counseling.

Winkler’s experience includes decades of handling matrimonial and family law matters involving divorce, domestic relations, settlement negotiations, and contested disputes. He is also a trained mediator and offers mediation services for clients who want to avoid extensive and expensive litigation when possible. Earlier in his career, he worked as an associate to former Assemblyman Peter J. Costigan and later became a partner in Costigan and Winkler.

James R. Winkler has served as the 100th President of the Suffolk County Bar Association and as President of the Suffolk County Matrimonial Bar Association. He has also chaired the Suffolk County Bar Association’s Matrimonial and Family Law Committee and other family law task forces. Winkler has been recognized as a Super Lawyer in matrimonial and family law since 2008 and has received an AV Preeminent peer review rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
