James P. Frantz

James P. Frantz is a veteran trial attorney with more than 45 years of experience representing clients in complex and high-stakes litigation. His practice focuses on catastrophic injury, wrongful death, mass torts, and major accident cases, including tractor-trailer collisions, aviation accidents, product liability, and industrial incidents.

James earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, cum laude, from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1975. He later received his Juris Doctor from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego in 1979, beginning a long career in trial advocacy.

James has played key leadership roles in some of the largest mass tort matters in the United States. He served on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee for the Porter Ranch Gas Leak litigation and wildfire litigation against Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison.

James has helped secure landmark verdicts and settlements, including $13.5 billion and $1.8 billion recoveries against public utilities and $800 million for victims of the Route 91 massacre. His work has also produced major jury verdicts, including $223 million, $55.4 million, and $18.5 million results.

James has received numerous professional honors, including recognition as a Super Lawyer and Best Lawyers in America for more than a decade. He has also been named among the Daily Transcript’s Top 10 Attorneys and holds an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell.

James P. Frantz is admitted to practice in California and several federal courts, including the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Central, and Northern Districts of California. He is active in many professional organizations and serves as a Special Master and long-time arbitrator for the State Bar of California.
