James McMillin

James McMillin is a seasoned criminal defense attorney who has served clients in Santa Cruz County for decades. Over the course of his career, he has handled a wide range of criminal matters, from misdemeanor offenses to the most serious felony charges. James completed his graduation in Mathematics from UC Santa Cruz. He later completed his legal education from Law School at the University of Santa Clara, where he earned his J.D., graduating magna cum laude. His academic background provided a strong foundation in analytical thinking, legal reasoning, and disciplined problem solving, which continue to shape his approach to criminal defense representation.

James served in the Santa Cruz County Public Defender’s Office for the majority of his career. During that time, he represented thousands of clients. He handled virtually every type of criminal charge, including driving offenses, drug crimes, theft, violent crimes, sexual assault cases, and complex homicide matters. He has tried well over one hundred cases before juries, giving him extensive insight into trial strategy, evidence presentation, and jury decision-making.

James has played a meaningful role in strengthening the legal profession beyond individual representation. He mentored and supervised younger attorneys, helping them develop practical felony trial skills.

James McMillin also prepared and delivered State Bar–approved continuing legal education programs and taught Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at the Monterey College of Law. Through both advocacy and education, he has consistently worked to ensure skilled, informed, and ethical criminal defense for the community.
