James E. Hickmon is a Board Certified Legal Specialist in Estate Planning and Probate Law and a Certified Financial Planner®. With decades of experience, he focuses on helping families and closely held business owners plan for the future through effective estate and succession planning strategies. James is recognized for his expertise and dedication to client-centered solutions.

James began his academic journey with a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 1992. He earned an MBA in Finance from East Carolina University in 1996, followed by his Juris Doctor from Wake Forest University School of Law in 2001. He also holds certification from the College of Financial Planning and is a CFP® professional.

James has spent his career guiding families in industries ranging from agriculture to technology through complex legal and financial matters. His work includes helping clients structure wealth transfers, reduce tax burdens, and manage fiduciary responsibilities. His articles have been featured in national and regional publications, such as the Bureau of National Affairs’ Tax Management and Compensation Planning Journal.

James is recognized by his peers with distinctions, such as being an AV Preeminent Peer Rated Lawyer by Martindale Hubbell and the Business North Carolina Legal Elite. He has also served as an adjunct law professor at Wake Forest University, teaching advanced estate topics to law students. His contributions extend to the North Carolina Bar Association’s Estate Administration and Fiduciary Litigation Manuals.

James volunteers with organizations at multiple levels. He has served as President of NAMI Virginia and currently supports the Humane Society of Charlotte. His professional involvement includes leadership roles with the American Bar Association’s Real Property and Estate Planning Section and participation in the ABA House of Delegates.
