James A. Baker, III, is a senior partner at Baker Botts L.L.P. and a distinguished statesman with an unparalleled career spanning law, government, and diplomacy. Serving under three U.S. Presidents, he held some of the nation’s most critical leadership roles, including Secretary of State, Secretary of the Treasury, and White House Chief of Staff. Known for his integrity, negotiation skills, and commitment to public service, Baker has been instrumental in shaping U.S. domestic and foreign policy for more than four decades.
Baker earned his Bachelor’s from Princeton University in 1952 and his J.D., with honors, from the University of Texas School of Law in 1957. Following his graduation, he practiced law at the Houston firm Andrews and Kurth for nearly two decades. His education and early legal career provided the foundation for his later success in navigating complex political and economic challenges at the highest levels of government and international diplomacy.
Throughout his public service, Baker led landmark initiatives, including managing U.S. foreign relations during the post-Cold War era, guiding the Treasury Department through major economic reforms, and overseeing multiple presidential campaigns. His leadership extended to global conflict resolution, serving as a United Nations envoy and as co-chair of major national commissions addressing Iraq policy and election reform.
