Mr. Downer earned his B.S. in Agriculture from Nicholls State University. He earned his Juris Doctor from Loyola School of Law. He later graduated from the United States Army War College and completed advanced military legal and leadership training, including Judge Advocate General courses, Air Assault School, the Military Police Officer Qualifications course, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.
Mr. Downer was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in 1975 and served seven terms representing District 52. He served as Speaker Pro Tempore from 1988 to 1992 and as Speaker of the House from 1996 to 2000. His legislative work included support for the military, veterans, law enforcement, firefighters, first responders, and homeland security. He also served as Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs from 2004 to 2008.
Hunt Downer Jr. also served in the U.S. Army Reserve and the Louisiana Army National Guard, later retiring as an Assistant Adjutant General with the rank of Major General. His more than 30 service awards reflect a career grounded in discipline, leadership, and public duty. He uses that background to advocate for injured clients facing serious personal, maritime, and offshore injury claims.
