Gwen R. Acker Wood

Gwen R. Acker Wood is a Pennsylvania intellectual property lawyer and the founder and president of Acker Wood Intellectual Property Law, LLC. She has more than 20 years of experience helping inventors, entrepreneurs, startups, universities, and established businesses protect their intellectual property. Her practice focuses on patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, licensing, patent enforcement, infringement analysis, and business agreements. She also assists clients with business entity formation, including LLCs, S corporations, and fictitious name registrations.

Gwen earned her M.S. in Hematology from New York University. She later received her PhD in Neuroscience from New York University before earning her J.D. from Duquesne University School of Law. Before entering the legal profession, she worked as a research scientist and received National Institutes of Health and National Institute of Mental Health postdoctoral fellowships. She also served as an adjunct professor at New York University and Duquesne University, teaching advanced pathophysiology, nutritional science, and environmental science.

Gwen prepares and prosecutes patent applications involving biomechanical and medical devices, biotechnology, life sciences, nutritional science, environmental science, and mechanical technologies. She also handles trademark searches, copyright registration, patentability opinions, infringement analyses, and intellectual property portfolio counseling. In addition, she drafts and reviews licensing agreements, nondisclosure agreements, assignments, and other commercial contracts that help clients protect and commercialize their innovations.

Gwen R. Acker Wood is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and Ohio, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Her combined scientific and legal background allows her to understand complex technologies while providing practical intellectual property guidance. She works closely with clients to develop strategies that protect innovation, strengthen business value, and support long-term commercial success.
