About

Gerald F. Chefalo has built a long legal career representing individuals and families facing difficult legal challenges throughout Northern Michigan. His practice covers criminal defense, OWI and drunk-driving cases, divorce, custody disputes, mediation, driver’s license restoration, and litigation. Since beginning his legal career in 1997, he has guided clients through complex matters with a practical and well-prepared approach.

Gerald earned a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing from Michigan State University, Eli Broad College of Business in 1994. He later received his Juris Doctor from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1997. After law school, he served as a law clerk for the Honorable Thomas L. Brown of the 30th Judicial Circuit Court and Court of Claims, gaining valuable courtroom and legal research experience.

Gerald focuses heavily on criminal defense and OWI matters. He represents clients facing misdemeanor and felony allegations, drunk-driving charges, domestic violence cases, drug offenses, theft crimes, probation violations, and traffic-related matters. His work includes examining evidence, legal procedures, and case details to help clients understand their options and protect their legal rights.

Gerald also handles family law matters involving divorce, custody, parenting time, child support, spousal support, and property division. These cases often involve significant personal and financial decisions. By combining legal knowledge with practical guidance, he helps clients make informed choices while working through challenging family transitions and disputes.

Gerald has been a court-approved mediator since 2008 and has managed a substantial mediation caseload over the years. His experience as both a mediator and litigator allows him to evaluate when settlement may be beneficial and when courtroom preparation is necessary. This balanced perspective helps clients pursue resolutions that fit their specific circumstances.

Gerald has received several recognitions during his career, including 13th Circuit Court Mediator of the Year in 2020, Traverse City Business News “40 Under 40” recognition in 2007, 2008, and 2010, Grand Traverse Insider People’s Choice Award for Best Law Firm in Traverse City from 2008–2012, and Record-Eagle Best Law Firm recognition in 2009.

Gerald F. Chefalo continues to serve clients across Northern Michigan in criminal defense, family law, mediation, driver’s license matters, and contested litigation. With decades of courtroom experience and a commitment to careful preparation, he works to help people understand legal processes, make informed decisions, and move forward with confidence during important moments in their lives.
