George R. Pitts is a nationally recognized attorney at Birch Horton Bittner & Cherot, focusing his practice on bankruptcy, creditors’ rights, and commercial litigation. With decades of experience, Mr. Pitts has represented a wide range of clients including debtors, creditors’ committees, financial institutions, trustees, franchisors, and federal agencies such as the FDIC and RTC in bankruptcy cases across the United States.
Mr. Pitts holds a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. He also earned a Ph.D. (1977) and M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a B.A. with High Honors from Swarthmore College (1972).
Admitted to practice in California, Virginia, and the District of Columbia, Mr. Pitts is also admitted to numerous federal district and appellate courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. His career includes handling bankruptcy matters in states such as New York, Delaware, Texas, Florida, and more. He is well-versed in loan restructurings, receiverships, foreclosures, collections, UCC litigation, and business torts.
Mr. Pitts has litigated both jury and non-jury trials in federal and state courts involving complex commercial disputes, partnership conflicts, real estate issues, unfair competition, and consumer credit law. He has also served as lead counsel in appellate matters, securing favorable outcomes in reported cases from the Fourth Circuit and the Supreme Court of Virginia.
George R. Pitts has been consistently listed in The Best Lawyers in America for Litigation-Bankruptcy (2015–2025) and was named Lawyer of the Year in 2021. He is a former Research Fellow with the American Council of Learned Societies and a published legal author with works featured in respected journals and industry publications.
