Douglas Richards

Douglas Richards is a partner at Richards Carrington in Denver, Colorado, where he represents clients in criminal defense matters and related litigation. His experience covers federal and state criminal allegations, including white collar offenses, drug cases, and serious felony charges. Having worked for both federal and county prosecutors, he approaches defense work with direct knowledge of criminal investigations, evidence collection, trial preparation, and government charging decisions.

Douglas earned a B.A. in English from Rollins College in 1998 and a J.D. from South Texas College of Law in 2004. He is admitted in Colorado and several other states and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. His education and courtroom background support his work in complex criminal matters that can involve federal statutes, investigative procedure, and closely contested evidence.

Before joining private practice, Douglas served as an Assistant United States Attorney, investigating and prosecuting drug trafficking organizations, international crime networks, public corruption, and white collar offenses. Earlier, at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, he tried serious felony matters including homicide, robbery, sexual assault, and vehicular cases. He has served as lead counsel in more than 100 jury trials across a career that also includes civil and commercial litigation.

Douglas Richards received the FBI Director’s Award in 2010 and recognition from Mothers Against Drunk Driving in 2007 and 2008 for work connected to vehicular prosecutions. His honors also include Colorado Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers in America recognition. He draws on years of trial and investigative experience to test the government’s evidence, examine contested allegations, and provide clients with informed guidance about the risks and options in criminal proceedings.
