Don McCarty

Don McCarty is a lawyer in Brookings, South Dakota, with a strong focus on trial work across a range of legal matters. His practice includes family law, criminal law, personal injury, business litigation, and workers’ compensation. Don graduated from the University of South Dakota School of Law with a juris doctorate in 1996. During his third year, he was named the George S. Mickelson Scholar, in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and dedication to public service before and during law school.

After admission to the South Dakota Bar, Don served as a law clerk for the First Judicial Circuit. Following his clerkship, he began private practice in Brookings. Over time, he developed strong litigation skills and built a reputation for handling complex legal matters across multiple areas of law.

Don has held several leadership roles in the legal community. He served as President of the Young Lawyers Section and completed multiple terms as a Bar Commissioner for the State Bar of South Dakota. He also continues to serve on the State Ethics Committee.

In addition to his legal work, Don serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of South Dakota School of Law, where he teaches Military Law. He has been admitted to practice in all South Dakota Courts, as well as the Federal District Court and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
