Dennis M. Mersberger

Dennis M. Mersberger is a co-founder of Schmergel & Mersberger, PLC, and a highly experienced criminal defense attorney with more than 20 years of experience in trial and appellate advocacy. His practice focuses almost exclusively on criminal defense, representing adults and juveniles in serious criminal, traffic, and federal matters throughout Virginia.

Dennis earned his Juris Doctor from George Mason University School of Law after completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature at Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. His educational background supports strong written and oral advocacy skills, which are essential in complex criminal trials and appeals.

Over the course of his career, Dennis has handled cases across Northern Virginia, including Alexandria, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Prince William County, Stafford County, and surrounding jurisdictions. He also represents clients in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, appearing in both the Alexandria and Richmond Divisions.

In addition to trial-level representation, Dennis regularly appears as appellate counsel before the Virginia Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Virginia. His appellate work reflects a comprehensive understanding of criminal procedure, constitutional issues, and post-conviction remedies, allowing him to advocate effectively beyond the courtroom.

Dennis remains actively involved in the legal community and has held leadership positions that demonstrate a long-standing commitment to criminal justice. His service includes years as Committee Chair of the Alexandria Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service and prior service as Policy Board Chair of the Alexandria Alcohol Safety Action Program.
