About
David M. Pitcher is senior counsel with Staas & Halsey LLP in Washington, DC and has practiced law for more than 35 years. His work focuses exclusively on intellectual property matters, with particular emphasis on patent and trademark protection, procurement, validity, enforcement, licensing, and broader intellectual property strategy. He advises clients in manufacturing, computer software and hardware, service, and financial industries on protecting and commercializing important technology and brand assets.
David earned a J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law and a B.S.E. from the University of Michigan. He attended the George Washington University Graduate School of Business. His engineering and legal education supports a practice that requires technical understanding, business judgment, and careful application of patent and trademark law. That combined background helps him evaluate innovation, licensing terms, infringement risk, and intellectual property protection in a commercial context.
David has spent decades advising clients on intellectual property strategy, licensing, patent protection, trademark issues, and enforcement. Before private practice, he worked as an attorney with the US government on litigation and economic pricing controls, served as a military aide to the President of the United States, and worked as an intellectual property attorney and engineer for a large manufacturing corporation. He has written and presented extensively on US intellectual property issues.
David M. Pitcher is admitted in New York and the District of Columbia and before several federal courts and the US Patent and Trademark Office. He has participated in major intellectual property organizations, including AIPLA, INTA, LES, AIPPI, and bar associations. His long experience across government, industry, engineering, and private practice helps clients approach patent, trademark, licensing, and enforcement questions with an integrated legal, technical, and business perspective.
