David D. Aughtry is a tax litigation attorney whose practice focuses on civil and criminal tax controversy matters. He represents clients in high-stakes disputes with the Internal Revenue Service and has tried or argued more than seventy cases. His work includes complex tax shelter disputes, corporate tax issues, and matters of first impression. He has appeared before the U.S. Tax Court, federal appellate courts, and the United States Supreme Court, securing significant victories.
David earned his B.A. in English from The Citadel. He received his J.D. and M. Acctcy. from the University of South Carolina. He later earned his LL.M. in Taxation from Emory University. His advanced education in accounting and tax law provides a strong technical foundation for handling intricate financial disputes. This academic background supports his ability to analyze complex transactions and present persuasive arguments in court.
Early in his career, David served as a Trial Attorney with the Internal Revenue Service, Office of the Chief Counsel, where he also acted as a Tax Shelter Coordinator. He later taught Tax Controversy as an Adjunct Professor in Emory University’s LL.M. and J.D. programs. His courtroom experience includes landmark cases such as Hubert v. Commissioner and Caracci v. Commissioner, where he achieved complete taxpayer victories in multimillion-dollar disputes.
David D. Aughtry is admitted to practice in Georgia, Texas, and South Carolina. He is recognized nationally for tax litigation, including listings in Chambers USA and The Legal 500. He is a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel and the International Society of Barristers.
