Dave earned his legal education at Northern Illinois University College of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor in 2001 and was selected as class speaker. He completed advanced judicial education through George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia School of Law, following earlier studies in political science at the University of Arizona.

Throughout his legal career, Dave has built a reputation for handling complex and high-stakes matters. In this role, he managed trials, sentencing, and grand jury proceedings while leading administrative and technology initiatives.

Before his judicial tenure, Dave worked as a founding partner of a litigation-focused law firm and as an Assistant State’s Attorney. As a lead gang crimes prosecutor, he handled serious criminal matters involving narcotics, organized crime, and violent offenses, gaining firsthand insight into prosecutorial strategy and case development.

Dave Carlson’s earlier roles further strengthened his legal foundation, including insurance defense and commercial litigation, municipal prosecution, and service as an adult probation officer. These positions provided a comprehensive perspective on both sides of the criminal justice system and the broader legal process.
