About

Darrius Culpepper is an of-counsel attorney with Maxwell Tillman + Coleman in Birmingham, Alabama. His practice includes criminal defense, criminal appeals, and post-conviction matters. Darrius works in legal areas where clients may face serious restrictions on liberty and need close attention to procedural and appellate issues. His previous public service and nonprofit work provide experience with people seeking access to legal relief and a fair review of their cases.

Darrius earned both a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a master’s degree in Public Administration from Auburn University. He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Alabama School of Law. On graduation, he was awarded the Order of the Samaritan, the law school’s highest public service recognition. His education combines legal training with the study of government and administration, supporting his focus on criminal justice and appeals.

Before becoming an attorney, Darrius served in AmeriCorps programs addressing poverty, health, and education in Alabama. His placements included Impact Alabama and the YWCA of Central Alabama, where he worked with children from families in transitional housing. He later served as an appellate attorney with Redemption Earned, a nonprofit organization focused on giving incarcerated adults another chance at freedom through legal advocacy.

Darrius Culpepper brings direct public-interest experience to criminal appellate and post-conviction representation. His background includes service with organizations working with economically vulnerable communities and people affected by incarceration. This experience informs his attention to the legal process after conviction as well as to the defense of criminal charges. He focuses on matters where careful review of records, procedure, and available legal remedies can be especially important.
