About

Daniel J. Reiter is a New York City attorney who focuses on adult guardianship, mental health law, kinship proceedings, and estate litigation. He represents guardians and petitioners in contested and uncontested guardianship proceedings and also represents alleged incapacitated and incapacitated persons. Reiter serves in court-appointed roles, including as a court evaluator, independent guardian, and guardian ad litem, helping clients and families address difficult questions involving capacity, property, care, and inheritance.

Reiter earned his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in 2013. He also earned an M.A. in International Relations and a B.A. in Political Science from New England College. During law school, he interned with Richmond County Surrogate’s Court and helped draft a judicial decision involving a guardianship dispute. His education and early court experience provided a strong foundation in legal research, guardianship procedure, estate matters, and the careful analysis required in contested proceedings.

Reiter regularly practices in New York Surrogate’s Court, where his work includes kinship proceedings, will contests, turnover proceedings, contested accountings, creditors’ claims against estates, and wrongful death compromise proceedings. He also handles adult guardianship matters under New York law and has represented parties with differing interests in capacity disputes. His experience allows him to address both the litigation and practical responsibilities that arise when courts oversee guardianships, estates, and fiduciary relationships.

Daniel J. Reiter is certified for several appointments under Part 36 of the Rules of the Chief Judge, including guardian, court evaluator, attorney for an alleged incapacitated person, guardian ad litem, and supplemental needs trustee. He also writes the Adult Guardianship Law Blog and Surrogate’s Court Monitor and regularly presents continuing legal education programs on guardianship, kinship, estate administration, diminished capacity, and related topics. His practice combines litigation experience with focused knowledge of New York guardianship and estate proceedings.
