Carlton D. Stansbury is a family law lawyer, mediator, and a founding partner at Burbach & Stansbury S.C. with decades of experience handling divorce and complex property division matters. His work includes divorces involving businesses, complex support questions, marital property agreements, appeals, and alternative dispute resolution. He develops individualized strategies based on each client’s circumstances and goals. His experience extends to collaborative practice, mediation, arbitration, and contested family law proceedings.
Carlton earned his J.D., with distinction, from the University of Iowa College of Law. He received his Bachelor’s Degree, cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. After law school, he clerked for Judge Daniel P. Anderson of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals. His academic and judicial experience established a strong foundation for a career centered on matrimonial law, appellate issues, and dispute resolution.
Carlton has completed matrimonial law arbitration training and extensive training in mediation and collaborative practice. He frequently teaches programs for Wisconsin judges, attorneys, and family law professionals. His published work has appeared in the Wisconsin Journal of Family Law and American Journal of Family Law. He has testified before the Wisconsin Supreme Court and Legislature regarding proposed legislation and judicial code changes.
Carlton D. Stansbury has been admitted to practice in Wisconsin since 1990. He is a Fellow and past Wisconsin chapter president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers and Wisconsin Law Foundation. His recognition includes Best Lawyers in America, Wisconsin Super Lawyers, and an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
