Carleton R. “Tex” Hoy

Carleton R. “Tex” Hoy is a highly respected trial attorney at Hoy Law with decades of experience representing individuals in complex legal matters. Throughout his career, he has handled a wide range of cases involving personal injury law, wrongful death, workers’ compensation death claims, bad faith insurance disputes, premises liability, products liability, and general litigation. Known for his extensive courtroom experience, he has represented clients in state and federal courts as well as proceedings before the Department of Labor. His work has focused on helping injured individuals and families seek fair compensation and legal accountability.

Mr. Hoy earned a B.S. in Business Administration in 1950 and a J.D. in 1956 from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. During law school, he served on the University of South Dakota Board of Law Review from 1955 to 1956. His academic foundation provided the knowledge and skills that helped shape a long and successful legal career.

Mr. Hoy has built an impressive record as a trial and appellate lawyer over the years. Early in his career, he served as a law clerk to the U.S. District Judge Mickelson and later worked as a law clerk for the District of South Dakota. He also served as a Special Assistant to the U.S. Attorney. These roles gave him valuable insight into the legal system and strengthened his ability to advocate effectively on behalf of clients.

Mr. Hoy has extensive experience handling appeals before the South Dakota Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. He has also held leadership positions in several respected legal organizations, including serving as President of the State Bar of South Dakota and the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association.
